Park District Welcomes New Executive Director Release Date: July 1, 2009
On June 1, the Glencoe Park District Board of Park Commissioners voted unanimously to hire Don Van Arsdale as the new Executive Director effective July 6, 2009.
After a five-month search process, the Park Board and staff welcome Van Arsdale with excitement, impressed by his relevant experience, very successful renovations project in Winnetka, and outstanding references and credentials. Park Board President Michael Brohman stated, “We're thrilled to have Don, and we’re looking forward to a long relationship with him."
Van Arsdale has experience and passion for park service and is no stranger to the North Shore. He served as Executive Director of the Winnetka Community House for 19 years, and prior to that with several park districts in the Chicago area. He has also served as President of the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association. Don looks forward to reentering parks and recreation, and especially with the beautiful beaches and green spaces of Glencoe.
During his tenure at the Winnetka Community House, Van Arsdale saw progress and accomplishments, including the development of the Antiques Show and Modernism Show in cooperation with the Woman’s Board. He was also a leader in the Winnetka Community House renovation project that began in 2001. This successful renovations project experience was a major factor in the selection of Van Arsdale as such an appealing candidate for Glencoe Park District.
"We were influenced by the programming he has been doing at the Community House; we were influenced by what has been done with the new facility," Brohman stated, adding that with Glencoe's newly renovated Takiff Center at 999 Green Bay Rd., "we were interested in his experience." Glencoe Park District welcomes Don Van Arsdale with much excitement to the position of Executive Director.

H1N1 Update
According to the Cook County Health Department and the Center for Disease Control, the symptoms of H1N1 are similar to symptoms of the regular flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. The CCDPH states that reported cases of the H1N1 flu have been mild and are now being treated as regular flu cases.
It is recommended that you contact your physician if your child has influenza-like symptoms (high fever with cough or sore throat) to be tested for influenza or strep throat. If your child is diagnosed with influenza, please keep your child home from Park District programs for ten calendar days after symptoms began or until 24 hours without symptoms, whichever is longer (for children 5 and younger, seven days for children 6 and older).
In addition, please consider the following measures suggested by public health officials:
• Wash hands often with soap and water, and always wash after coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not nearby, you may also use an alcohol-based hand gel. • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue, and promptly throw away used tissues. • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth because germs are spread this way. • Avoid direct contact with others who are sick.
If you have questions or would like further information about the H1N1 virus, please contact the Cook County Department of Public Health at (708) 492-2000 or visit www.cookcountypublic health.org. We will post additional updates as they become available.
